Seller Cleaning Guide Before Moving - Laffey Real Estate

Whether you're moving out of state, to a different city, or just across town, packing and cleaning for the move can feel like an overwhelming task that's too big to tackle. To make things less stressful, our real estate agents recommend getting organized and prepared before you begin.

If you've sold your Long Island home, there's a lot to do before you move on. Here's a list of helpful tips for making packing and cleaning a breeze.

  1. Gather Your Supplies
Before you do anything, gather the necessary supplies to clean the house and pack for moving. Before heading out, make a list of things you need to tackle the tasks. With a trip to a local hardware store and a moving supply store, you can quickly round up what you need.

  2. Pack Your Stuff First
Packing for your move first makes cleaning more efficient. When you've finished packing clothes and household items into storage boxes, crates, and suitcases, you have easier access to floors, walls, and cabinets and a better idea of how much cleaning is necessary.

  3. Move Boxes to One Area
If it's not possible to move boxes to your new location, a storage unit, or the garage, move them to one area of the house to create less clutter while you're cleaning. Once you move out, you can tidy up the area where boxes were stored by dusting and cleaning the floors.

  4. Clean from Top to Bottom
When moving in and moving out, always clean from top to bottom starting at the ceiling and moving to the floor. Cobwebs and dust on ceilings, crown moldings, and ceiling fixtures will fall to items below. You'll need a ladder, broom, long-handled duster, and a face mask to keep from breathing in airborne dirt and dust.

  5. Wash the Walls, Doors, and Trim
To tackle dirty or stained walls, doors, and trim, you need a bucket of warm, soapy water and a clean cloth. Once the water and clothes get dirty, change them. Be careful using over-the-counter cleaners on painted surfaces, because they may contain chemicals that can discolor or streak the paint. While cleaning, wipe down wall plates and light switch covers that collect dirt and grime from constant use.

  6. Clean Windows and Glass
For more natural light and a brighter home, dust and clean window frames, window ledges, and glass panes. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dirt and dust, then clean with warm, soapy water and a damp cloth. Clean the glass with a soft, lint-free cloth and a non-abrasive window cleaner that won't leave streaks.

  7. Clean the Kitchen and Bathroom
Your kitchen and bathroom will need a good deep cleaning to disinfect floors, cabinets, and countertop surfaces and get rid of stubborn stains and odors.

  8. Sweep, Mop, and Vacuum Floors
Leave cleaning the floors for last so you can tackle the entire house at the same time. If it's possible to move out of the house first, cleaning the floors will be much easier and you won't track dirt and dust from room to room. Moving out first is especially important if you need to put wax on the floors to renew the shine.
